2026/27

Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) Mammography

60 Credits

Course overview

The award gained upon successful completion of the course is PgCert Mammography (King’s College Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust).

This course and the modules listed within it form the collaborative agreement between London South Bank University and the National Breast Training Centre, King’s College Hospital, NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a postgraduate post-registration course for qualified and registered radiographers. Upon successful completion of the course the participant will be competent to practice mammography.

All mammographers working within the NHS Breast Screening Programme are required to hold a UK certificate of competency to practice.  This course will facilitate this training and provide the relevant certification. It incorporates the knowledge and skills required to convey the College of Radiographers Postgraduate Certificate of Competence in Mammography, which provides the baseline requirement to practice as a radiographer in mammography.

For the PgCert award, the student must obtain 60-credits at level 7. The programme consists of two compulsory modules. Upon successful completion and award of the PgCert, students can then study additional modules within the Pg Dip / MSc Diagnostic Imaging programme via the CPPD Open modular route to work towards a higher award.

For a Pg Cert Mammography, the student must take the following compulsory modules:

  • Theoretical Principles of Breast Care AHP_7_123 Module (20 credits)
  • Mammography Practice AHP_7_124 Module (40 Credits)

The Pg Cert Mammography course aims to:

  1. Ensure that the graduating students achieve the competency requirements as outlined by the Society and College of Radiographers for mammography practice, the NHSBSP for breast imaging and breast care.
  2. Develop confident and competent practitioners who practice autonomously, compassionately, skilfully, and safely whilst maintaining dignity and promoting health and wellbeing in the breast care services.
  3. Develop a reflective and analytical approach to working practice, engaging in research and audit processes, and fostering a lifelong commitment to learning, development, and evidence-based practice.

There is an opportunity to continue post the PGCert Mammography 6020 to build the foundation towards a PgDip/MSc. This course is validated as part of the Diagnostic Imaging PgDip / MSc
